OK that all said let us get on with this great mod and have some fun!

Introduction

This document is intended to highlight the complete installation of an additional 12v trickle charging port in the car's trunk. Why you may ask? Basically because we are lazy. Currently to install a trickle charger, either long term or for an over night battery charge, you have to either get into the car and plug a charger into the Cigar Lighter socket, or open the trunk, take the battery cover off, and connect up a conventional charger. As our car is parked close to the right side of the garage, the passenger door is hard to open without the potential of some unintended door rash on a nearby table a table saw or other objects that are in the way. It is far easier to open the trunk and connect a charger there.

This mod conveniently doubles up as a 12v power port in the trunk to power any 12v appliance such as a small car vacuum cleaner. It is easy to install and the parts can be found almost anywhere. We got ours from West Marine as boat parts tend to be better quality than those for a car, as they have to survive a harsher environment.

This document is intended to be a helpful installation guide. If you follow the photos you should be able to complete the installation safely and have some fun while you are doing it. The separate sections of this installation are intended for reference, they were not necessarily carried out in the order they appear.

You will notice things like the plastic covers and such have been removed in the photos. We will not go in detail how to remove them, the information can be found in the Porsche 996TT repair manual.

Objectives

Before we embarked on this project we set the following objectives:

Parts and Tools Required

  • 1 x 12v Cigar Style Plug and Socket Kit - Mandatory
  • Some 15 amp wire - Mandatory
  • Some crimp connectors - Mandatory
  • A Correct sized Hole Saw for your Socket, we used a 1" Hole Saw - Mandatory
  • Normal Tools, Screw Drivers etc. - Mandatory

Selecting the Charging Port Location

Bearing in mind that we like "Stealthy" installations we selected a relatively inconspicuous spot under the trunk lid. We wanted to select a location that we could access reasonably easily. We selected the front right side plastic cover for our location.

Charging Port Wiring

Please remember all the safety rules here, battery disconnect triple checking positive versus negative connections. Make sure not to short out the positive wire to ground by mistake when it is connected to the battery.

This is very easy, first we selected a location for the Ground wire. Porsche engineering being what it is had of course realized we were going to do the mod and place a ground lug conveniently in our select area. The Positive wire of course has to go to the plus (+) side of the battery. Be careful to not the polarity of the Cigar Lighter. Positive is usually in the center pin. We used small tie wraps to secure the wires in place.

There is an existing hole in the positive terminal of the car, we used this as our positive (+) source, you will also notice a Red wire there, that is for the Meth Injection System Power (That install is also described on this Web Site in a dedicated section)

Well That is Basically It

All we did next was re-install the plastic cover and started charging our battery.

Time Estimates to Complete the Installation

These are our estimates. You could probably do it faster if you wanted to and did not document anything.

  • Removing all the covers - 15 minutes
  • Drilling the Hole - 15 Minutes
  • Mounting the Charging Socket - 15 Minutes
  • Making the Loom - 20 Minutes
  • Installing the Loom - 15 Minutes
  • Putting the Cover Back - 5 Minutes
  • Installing the Tricle Charger - 5 Seconds
